In ambito biomedico, la definizione di una patologia è fondamentalmente un processo culturale, dove identificazione e illustrazione delle caratteristiche che definiscono una patologia sono oggetto di un processo logico di sintesi, atto a distinguere quel determinato quadro clinico da altre patologie. Ciò allo scopo di permettere al clinico la sua identificazione e di attuare strategie terapeutiche mirate alla sua eziopatogenesi.
