L’insufficienza circolatoria e lo shock, conseguenti all’incapacità del cuore di funzionare come pompa, sono alla base della definizione di “shock cardiogeno”. È fondamentale ricordare che lo shock è un quadro patologico che si realizza, nei mammiferi, a livello del metabolismo cellulare, in seguito ad alterazioni esterne che comportano un insufficiente apporto di nutrienti e che quindi, in ultima analisi, danneggiano la funzione mitocondriale.
