Riassunto

Come sappiamo, il mantenimento del calo ponderale rappresenta uno degli aspetti più critici nel trattamento dell’obesità (Jeffery et al., 2000). Sebbene vi sia una generale percezione di insuccesso, la letteratura ci mostra invece come il 20% degli individui in sovrappeso ottengano buoni risultati nel medio-lungo periodo, mantenendo il calo ponderale raggiunto per la durata di 1 anno (Wing e Phelan, 2005). I programmi finalizzati al calo ponderale che includono dieta, esercizio fisico e modificazioni dello stile di vita comportano una perdita di peso corporeo in media del 10% (Wing, 2004) che, come indicano le linee guida attuali, generano significativi benefici per la salute (National Institutes of Health, 1998). Tuttavia, le evidenze empiriche sull’argomento dimostrano che la maggior parte dei soggetti, dopo il trattamento per la riduzione del peso, tornano al peso iniziale tra i 3 e i 5 anni (Wing et al., 2006). Appare, quindi, chiaro che la sfida più grande che si pone al paziente e, con lui, allo specialista è quella rappresentata dal mantenimento a lungo termine del calo ponderale ottenuto in precedenza.
