Questo capitolo fornisce alcuni concetti basilari necessari per la comprensione degli argomenti affrontati nel prosieguo della trattazione. Dopo un’introduzione alle principali tematiche di logistica e supply chain management, viene presentato il concetto di costo totale logistico, con le relative componenti, rappresentate dai costi delle singole attività logistiche. Sono quindi descritti gli imballaggi e le relative modalità di identificazione. Il capitolo fornisce, infine, una panoramica delle tematiche discusse nel resto del volume, accennando al ruolo della tecnologia RFID nella risoluzione delle problematiche di natura logistica affrontate nei capitoli successivi.
