Le galassie sono le strutture fondamentali dell’Universo alle grandi scale. Oltre alle stelle, di varie popolazioni e composizioni, contengono grandi quantità di gas neutro, polveri, nubi molecolari, campi magnetici e raggi cosmici. Sono spazialmente aggregate in piccoli gruppi oppure in grandi ammassi. Al centro di molte galassie esiste un nucleo compatto molto luminoso, che può dominare la luminosità dell’intera galassia.
