Dati elaborati da Rarecare (www.rarecare.eu), il progetto europeo per la stima dell’incidenza dei tumori rari, indicano che l’incidenza annuale globale dei tumori maligni delle ghiandole salivari è di circa 2 casi/100.000 persone. Negli Stati Uniti, le neoplasie maligne delle ghiandole salivari costituiscono circa il 6% di tutti i tumori maligni del distretto testa e collo, e lo 0.3% di tutti i tumori maligni. Il 64–80% di tutti i tumori epiteliali primitivi delle ghiandole salivari si manifestano nelle ghiandole parotidi, il 7–11% nelle ghiandole sottomandibolari, meno dell’1% nelle ghiandole sottolinguali, e il 9–23% nelle ghiandole salivari minori. I tumori benigni rappresentano il 54–79%, mentre il 21–46% sono maligni. I tumori maligni comprendono il 15–32% dei tumori parotidei, il 41– 45% dei tumori sottomandibolari, il 70–90% dei tumori sottolinguali e circa il 50% dei tumori delle ghiandole salivari minori. L’80–90% dei tumori che originano dalle ghiandole salivari minori della lingua, del pavimento orale e delle aree retromolari sono maligni.
