Disturbi dell’umore e violenza sono intimamente correlati in molti modi. La violenza può giocare un ruolo nello sviluppo di un successivo disturbo dell’umore e può esacerbare o perpetuare disturbi già esistenti. Alternativamente, la violenza può essere una conseguenza o un correlato di un disturbo dell’umore. Inoltre, parecchi fattori biologici, sociali e psicologici associati a violenza ed aggressioni frequentemente coesistono con i disturbi dell’umore, cosìe la presenza concomitante di violenza e disturbi dell’umore è vista di frequente in individui o sistemi. In queste situazioni la violenza può essere rivolta verso di sé, gli altri, od oggetti.
