La violenza da parte di un partner intimo (Intimate Partner Violence, IPV) può assumere molte forme, tra cui l’abuso emotivo, fisico e/o sessuale; questo capitolo si focalizza specificatamente sull’abuso fisico e sessuale inflitto da un individuo contro il proprio partner intimo, che può essere un coniuge, un convivente ma anche una persona, dello stesso sesso o opposto, con cui si esca. È importante riconoscere, tuttavia, che spesso esiste una correlazione tra abuso emotivo e violenza fisica, che può assumere numerose forme, incluso il maltrattare o picchiare, lo stupro, l’omicidio, il suicidio forzato. Violenza che può avvenire per mezzo di pugni, piedi, organi sessuali, tramite avvelenamento, annegamento, impiccagione, fuoco, scariche elettriche, coltelli, pistole e/o altre armi (Loue, 2001b) e può capitare in una varietà di contesti, non solo a casa. La violenza può essere perpetrata per diverse ragioni dichiarate, incluse le pressioni economiche e la non soddisfazione per gli atteggiamenti o il comportamento del partner.
