La transizione da corrente veloce a corrente lenta induce la insorgenza di un risalto idraulico; tale fenomeno viene qui illustrato a partire dai concetti fondamentali e dalla applicazione del principio di conservazione della quantità di moto. In particolare, oltre al classico caso riferito alla sezione rettangolare, vengono illustrati anche i casi in cui il risalto idraulico ha luogo in sezioni di geometria ricorrente nelle applicazioni progettuali: sezione circolare, sezione ovoidale e sezione a ferro di cavallo. Nella seconda parte sono inoltre illustrati alcuni manufatti, il cui utilizzo può essere opportuno quando si rende necessario indurre significative perdite di energia alla corrente idrica. La parte finale del capitolo è dedicata alla descrizione dei principali bacini di dissipazione standardizzati e di alcuni manufatti particolari che possono indurre considerevoli dissipazioni di energia.
