Riassunto

La lesione elementare dell’aterosclerosi consiste in una placca focale localizzata nell’intima, con nucleo centrale di lipidi (in particolare colesterolo e suoi esteri) e ricoperta da un cappuccio fibroso. La placca ateromatosa tende a protrudere nel lume dell’arteria. Le dimensioni variano fra 0,3 e 1,5 cm di diametro, anche se talvolta le singole placche possono fondersi in lesioni più estese (Fig. 4.1) [1].
