Abstract
Pancreas transplantation, developed to provide a self-regulated endogenous source of responsive insulin to the usual feedback systems, is the only therapy able to establish euglycemic status and standardization of glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic patients [1, 2]. Despite exogenous insulin support, metabolic control is usually incomplete in diabetic patients, and in the long run diabetes causes many complications, such as retinopathy, sensitive and motorial neuropathy, vascular disease and, in 20–30% of cases, nephropathy.
