Abstract

In comparison to other large joints, the hip is less frequently afflicted by intraarticular bleeding, probably due to the localization of the synovial lining, thereby being less prone to mechanical injury [1]. While intra-articular bleeding in childhood typically induces morphological changes as observed in Perthes, disease [2, 3], knee and ankle arthropathy of the hemophiliac adult is frequently associated with a valgus deformity of the hip [1, 4]. The reason for this may be that in earlier years the typical treatment regime (for hemophiliacs) was immobilization, resulting in severe disturbance of muscular development, combined with varus deformity of the knee [4].
