Blalock’s initial experience in the early 1940s and subsequently published series of surgically treated patients led to the widespread acceptance of thymectomy in the treatment of MG despite the absence of a prospective randomized trial comparing surgery with medical treatment alone . Controversies remain, however, with regard to the timing and extent of surgery to be performed.
