Abstract

Blalock’s initial experience in the early 1940s and subsequently published series of surgically treated patients led to the widespread acceptance of thymectomy in the treatment of MG despite the absence of a prospective randomized trial comparing surgery with medical treatment alone [1]. Controversies remain, however, with regard to the timing and extent of surgery to be performed.
