La rapidità con cui Listeria monocytogenes si è imposta come agente eziologico di malattie di origine alimentare è unica. La sindrome da immunodeficienza acquisita (AIDS) e la legionellosi sono altri due esempi di malattie umane comparse rapidamente ma, a differenza della listeriosi, i loro agenti eziologici erano precedentemente sconosciuti come patogeni umani ed erano difficili da coltivare. Non solo L. monocytogenes è piuttosto facile da coltivare, ma la listeriosi è una malattia ben documentata in diverse specie animali e casi umani non erano sconosciuti.
