Le cefalee che seguono acutamente un traumatismo del capo, del collo o dell’encefalo sono generalmente definibili come cefalee post-traumatiche. Cefalee secondarie per definizione, in quanto “cefalee di nuova insorgenza che si verificano in stretta correlazione temporale con un evento che è noto essere causa di cefalea” come il trauma cranico, si riscontrano per la maggior parte in assenza di lesioni strutturali intracraniche o di evidenti danni dello scalpo o della teca cranica. Si associano spesso ad altri sintomi come stordimento, pseudovertigini, irritabilità, difficoltà di concentrazione, insonnia, variazioni di personalità che, aventi la cefalea come sintomo preminente, configurano la cosiddetta sindrome post-traumatica.
