The Presence of Giuseppe Occhialini in the Centenary of his Birth

Conference paper

Quite conveniently, in 1993 Giuseppe Occhialini was appointed as a Honorary Member of the European Physical Society. Actually, he can be looked at as a still significant symbol of the growing European spirit. He almost emblematically embodied the most positive roles assumed by Europe on worldwide scale in the second half of the twentieth century. Indeed, he grew an open-minded, totally unprejudiced attitude with respect to all cultures, in particular towards the ones pertaining to the New Continent; at the same time, he cultivated the will of competing with the rapid development of the corresponding resource-rich countries by joining the different European national potentials and exploiting their great cultural tradition.
