Le apparecchiature attuali dispongono di due, se non più, sonde multifrequenza. Le sonde ad alta frequenza (7–15 MHz) consentono una valutazione dettagliata delle strutture superficiali ma hanno un campo di vista piuttosto stretto (in genere, 4 cm) ed un limitato potere di penetrazione; in ogni caso in cui è necessario studiare strutture più profonde oppure definire l’effettiva ampiezza di lesioni superficiali ma voluminose, è necessario ricorrere a sonde di frequenza più bassa (2–7 MHz), pur con la conseguente perdita di risoluzione [Torzilli et al. 1997]. È importante sfruttare le diverse frequenze disponibili, e modificarle nel corso dell’esame unitamente alla variazione del posizionamento del/i fuochi. In particolare a livello mammario, per la sonda small parts, ed in sede epatica, per la sonda internistica, una variazione di frequenza e focalizzazione permette di adattare le caratteristiche dell’insonazione all’habitus del singolo soggetto, ed al tempo stesso di esplorare in maniera ottimale tutte le porzioni, superficiali e profonde, dell’organo in esame.
