Alexander Grothendieck nasce a Berlino il 28 Marzo 1928. Il padre, Sasha Shapiro, anarchico di origine russa, ebbe parte attiva nei movimenti rivoluzionari prima in Russia e poi in Germania, negli anni ’20, dove incontrò Hanka Grothendieck, la madre di Alexander. Dopo l’avvento del nazismo la Germania era troppo pericolosa per un rivoluzionario ebreo e la coppia si trasferì in Francia, lasciando Alexander in affidamento ad una famiglia presso Amburgo. Nel 1936, durante la guerra civile spagnola, il padre di Alexander si associò agli anarchici nella resistenza contro Franco. Nel 1939, Alexander raggiunse i genitori in Francia ma il padre fu arrestato e — anche in seguito alle leggi razziali, promulgate dal governo di Vichy nel 1940 — mandato ad Auschwitz dove morì nel 1942. Hanka ed Alexander Grothendieck furono anch’essi deportati ma scamparono all’eccidio. Alexander riuscì a frequentare il liceo al Collège Cévenol in Chambon-sur-Lignon alloggiando nella casa Secours Suisse per bambini rifugiati, separatamente dalla madre, era però costretto a scappare nei boschi ad ogni rastrellamento della Gestapo. Fu poi studente all’Università di Montpellier e nell’autunno del 1948 arrivò a Parigi con una lettera di presentazione per Èlie Cartan.
