Le malattie, quale più quale meno, sono tutte per lo meno fastidiose, ma alcune sono dolorose o molto dolorose. Per secoli la malattia è stata interpretata come una punizione degli dei per una colpa commessa nei loro confronti1. Anche con il cristianesimo questa filosofia trova un accomodamento ed si instaura quindi meccanismo per cui colui che soffre cerca di trovare un peccato da espiare e, nel frattempo, cerca di trovare una scorciatoia nei confronti dell’Onnipotente. I santi sono allora le figure che meglio possono fare da tramite tra l’uomo e la divinità e, come nel Pantheon pagano, si cristallizzano delle facoltà soprannaturali per ogni evenienza. In mancanza di medicine efficaci la gente si rivolgeva (e molti ancora lo fanno!) al suo santo preferito o, meglio ancora, al santo “specializzato” per quella bisogna. Si identificano progressivamente i santi cui chiedere la guarigione di quella malattia particolare a tal punto che alcune malattie (es.: il fuoco di Sant’Antonio, il ballo di San Vito, ecc,) oppure alcuni rimedi classici della fitoterapia (l’erba di San Giovanni) vengono denominate col nome di santi.
