La natura delle lesioni polmonari e pleuriche puÒ essere definita in modo relativamente accurato attraverso un’analisi dei dati clinici e radiografici, ma l’esame di campioni tissutali o cellulari resta imprescindibile per definirne il tipo istologico ed impostare una corretta terapia chirurgica o medica. Negli ultimi anni l’esigenza di ottenere una diagnosi attraverso indagini poco invasive, ha portato ad un utilizzo sempre più frequente della citologia come prima fase diagnostica nelle lesioni polmonari, anticipando e a volte sostituendo l’esame istopatologico.
