Il setto interventricolare è composto da una porzione muscolare che può essere suddivisa a sua volta in tre componenti maggiori (inlet, trabecolare e outlet) e una piccola porzione membranosa subito sotto la valvola aortica. I difetti del setto interventricolare (DIV) sono classificati in tre categorie principali indipendentemente dalla loro localizzazione e dai margini (Fig. 9.1).
