È stato dimostrato che la capacità o l’attività fisica è gravemente ridotta nei pazienti con una cardiopatia congenita sia in storia naturale sia sottoposta a trattamento. Il consumo di ossigeno massimo è di circa la metà del valore normale per età e sesso e diminuisce ulteriormente con l’età. Si ritiene che i fattori responsabili di limitata capacità fisica siano una ridotta capacità vitale, un’incompetenza cronotropa, una ridotta funzione ventricolare cosÌ come un’alterata risposta all’esercizio fisico da parte del sistema simpatico e parasimpatico.
