Nel Regno Unito l’incidenza di malattie cardiache durante la gravidanza si è ridotta, nell’ultima metà del secolo, da circa il 3% a meno dell’1%. Ciò in conseguenza della sensibile riduzione dell’incidenza della febbre reumatica dovuta all’introduzione della penicillina (benché gli effetti reumatici siano ancora comuni nelle donne nate oltre oceano). Tuttavia circa lo 0,8% dei bambini che nascono è affetto da cardiopatia congenita: questo è uno dei gruppi maggiori di difetti congeniti. Grazie al miglioramento dei risultati degli interventi chirurgici negli ultimi trent’anni si rileva una maggiore sopravvivenza di questi soggetti fino all’età riproduttiva.
