Il tronco arterioso comune, anche conosciuto come truncus arteriosus è una rara patologia caratterizzata da un’unica grossa arteria (tronco arterioso) che origina dai ventricoli. C’è sempre un grosso difetto interventricolare (DIV). Le arterie polmonari si dipartono dall’aorta ascendente con una origine comune o indipendente (Fig. 21.1). Non esiste comunque comunicazione diretta tra le arterie polmonari e il ventricolo destro. La valvola truncale è spesso displasica con tre o più cuspidi e può essere insufficiente e/o stenotica. Il grado di degenerazione della valvola truncale è fondamentale per la prognosi.
