L’asma è una malattia infiammatoria cronica delle vie aeree associata a iperreattività bronchiale, ostruzione al flusso reversibile e sintomi respiratori. Tutti i pazienti asmatici sono a rischio di riacutizzazioni, da lievi a molto gravi, caratterizzate da progressivo aumento della dispnea, tosse, sibili, senso di costrizione toracica e da una riduzione dei flussi espiratori e del FEV1. Le condizioni cliniche del paziente asmatico possono deteriorarsi nel giro di alcune ore, giorni o settimane. Alcuni pazienti possono peraltro avere un attacco asmatico improvviso, associato ad un inaspettato incremento dell’ostruzione delle vie aeree, che compare nel giro di alcuni minuti.
