Nei pazienti affetti da neoplasia sistemica solida, le localizzazioni metastastiche sono la seconda causa di disfunzione cerebrale dopo l’encefalopatia metabolica. Le casistiche pubblicate sulle metastasi cerebrali (BM) mostrano notevoli differenze [1]. Gli studi epidemiologici basati sui certificati di morte, sulle cartelle cliniche ospedaliere e sui registri dei tumori, considerati singolarmente o in combinazione, sottostimano l’incidenza delle metastasi intracraniche spesso anche sintomatiche, mentre gli studi autoptici indicano che le BM sono complicanze assai frequenti [24]. Circa il 20–40% dei pazienti deceduti per neoplasia presenta metastasi intracraniche, nel 15–20% è coinvolto il parenchima cerebrale che rappresenta l’unica localizzazione metastatica intracranica nel 10% dei casi.
