Il dolore nei pazienti con cancro è un sintomo che richiede una attenta valutazione ed un trattamento adeguato. L’importanza del problema risulta evidente sia dalle stime di prevalenza dell’ Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS), in cui risulta che il 30% dei pazienti sottoposti ad un trattamento attivo ed il 70% dei pazienti con tumore in fase avanzata presentano dolore dovuto alla progressione di malattia, sia dal grave impatto sulla qualità di vita legato all’intensità e alla persistenza del sintomo. La presenza cronica di dolore infatti interferisce con le attività quotidiane, le relazioni sociali, l’autonomia e con l’equilibrio psicologico del paziente.
