Abstract

Femoral hernia occurs through the femoral ring and is commoner in women than in men. Presentation is either with a bulge in the groin or with features of intestinal obstruction. To avoid complications patients are advised surgery upon diagnosis of a femoral hernia. The surgery can be undertaken under local, regional or general anaesthesia and may involve an open or a laparoscopic repair. In a given patient, medical co-morbidities, elective versus emergent presentation and surgeon comfort with a particular approach dictate the choice of technique.
