Abstract

Although agriculture contributed only 13.7% (at constant 2004–05 prices) of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2012–13, its importance in the country’s socio-economic development goes well beyond this indicator as almost half of workforce (48.9%) is employed in agriculture (CSO 2013a, b and GoI 2013a). About 69% of the people live in rural areas, a large number of whom (216.5 million) are poor and mainly depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
