Abstract

The background and evolution of Knowledge Management have been delineated in this chapter. The entire gamut of Knowledge Management from envisioning to evaluation finds a place in this chapter. Besides providing the theoretical aspects and various theories of Knowledge Management, the principles of Knowledge Management also find a place here. The salient definitions of Knowledge Management have been provided and a commentary has also been given. Knowledge Management models and processes involved in it have been given. A brief mentioning of learning organization and taxonomy of knowledge is a part of this chapter. Since human resource management literature has taken Knowledge Management under its fold, the human resource management and other organizational and social aspects have been pinpointed and their relevance in Knowledge Management has been carried out. Though the information and communication technologies have been branded as Enablers, an attempt has been made to trace the Knowledge Management Systems related to ICT. As any background to Knowledge Management will entail the evaluation and audit, these also find a place in this chapter.
