Abstract

Obstetric patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) present a unique challenge to an intensivist because of normal physiological changes during pregnancy. Care of both the mother and fetus should be the point of focus. Indications for admission to an ICU for obstetric patients are severe preeclampsia, amniotic fluid embolism, hemorrhage, eclampsia, congenital and valvular heart disease, non-obstetric sepsis, cardiomyopathy, and severe anemia. The purpose of this is to review the recent concepts in critical care management of obstetric patients with special focus being on ventilatory strategies. This chapter does not include other comorbidities in respect to pregnancy and hence will not be discussed.
