Abstract

Importance of child health is a key feature of the Unani system from ancient times. Physical care of the pregnant and nursing mother, care of the newborn are described in detail. Breast feeding was considered most beneficial to the child. Ibn Sina was concerned with child’s sensory motor and development along with emotional and moral training as well as primary education. Diet, exercise and cleanliness were considered important.

Generous help in translating the paediatric texts into English was received from Prof. K.M. Siddiqui, Director, and his team at the National Institute of Unani Medicine in Bangalore.
