Abstract
This chapter discusses important issues of transportation system which holds the key in effective provision of transport service/mobility. It discusses the vehicular stock and its temporal dynamics, density of vehicles, and the density of road network that holds the key in meeting the travel needs. It also addresses the dynamics of model share in city transportation systems. Environmental implications of the transport sector are growing as a major concern, and this chapter discusses the contribution of the transport sector to the deterioration in the quality of ambient air. It concludes by discussing various initiatives that are attempted at national level in order to control the externalities from the transportation sector.
