Abstract

The knowledge of fermentation is ancient perhaps prehistorical. Sumerians and Egyptians possessed the knowledge of technique by which they could convert the starchy grains into alcohol. In due course of time, fermentation processes have been developed to manufacture a vast range of materials from chemically simple feedstocks such as ethanol to high complex protein structures. This chapter delas with different processes of Fermentation viz. Batch, Fed-Batch, and Continuous Fermentation, Solid state and Submerged fermentation. It also provides an insight to components of a typical bioreactor, types of bioreactions, media used for industrial Fermentations and gives an overiew of the downstream processing.
