Ecology of Culex tritaeniorhynchus in Karnal District (JE Endemic Area), Haryana State in Northern India

Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral disease has been a serious public health problem in Karnal District, Haryana since 1990. The District remained endemic for JE affecting children with very high case fatality rate ranging from 45 to 100 %. In spite of the seriousness of the disease, no published record was available regarding abundance of JE vector species, the entomological evidence of the disease from anywhere in the state. This chapter presents the results of ecological studies undertaken on Culex tritaeniorhynchus, principal JE vector species in selected study sites in Karnal District. The seasonal abundance of vector species closely follows rainfall pattern with peak vector abundance occurred during peak monsoon period in the area. In Karnal District, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus breeds principally in paddy fields that remained water logged for nearly 3 months (July–September). JE virus infection was detected by ELISA in one mosquito pool comprising of female Cx. tritaeniorhynchus mosquitoes collected from Peri-urban area of Karnal town 10 days before the appearance of human cases in the area. Selective immunization of children below >15 years and integrated vector control strategies are suggested to contain child death due to Japanese encephalitis in Karnal District.
