An XML Description of Carbohydrate Structures

Several glycomics databases are being developed, and the numbers of glycan sequences stored in these are increasing because of improvements in high-throughput carbohydrate sequencing technologies such as mass spectrometry. However, the formats used to record glycan sequences differ between databases. The differences in the data formats hamper access and exchange of data, and prevent the bioinformatics community from developing novel software for glycomics. The complexity of carbohydrate sequences also makes it difficult to define a common language to represent them, and the development of bioinformatics tools for glycomics has not progressed.
