Sugar Chain-Related Genes: Glycosyltransferases Expression System

Abstract

In the synthesis of glycans, it is best to apply organic chemistry if we require a large amount of single structure, while an enzymatic synthesis using various glycosyltransferases with different substrate specificities is a suitable method when we need a variety of glycans in small quantity. However, commercially available glycosyltransferases are limited in variety which then restricts the types of synthesizable glycans. The structural and functional analyses of glycans involve the syntheses of various glycan structures, hence it is vital to have a variety of glycosyltransferases.
