UDP-N-acetyl-d-galactosamine:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferases (ppGaNTases) are the glycosyltransferases that transfer GalNAc from the sugar donor UDP-GalNAc to serine and threonine residues on polypeptides (White et al. 1995; Ten Hagen et al. 2003). This is the initial step of mucin-type linkages (GalNAcα1-O-Ser/Thr); hence, this enzyme family is involved in the first step in mucin biosynthesis.
