Abstract
High quality laser-ablated YlBa2Cu4O8 films are investigated using a low temperature ultra-high vacuum STM/STS system at room temperature as well as at cryogenic temperatures. In contrast to YlBa2Cu3O7−y counterpart, no evidence of spiral growth mechanism is found in YlBa2Cu4O8 films. Four different types of surface feature are observed and the surface feature is found to be highly sensitive to the preparation conditions. STS measurements reveal that the surface of the thin films is degraded. This degradation makes the attempt to detect a reproducible superconducting energy gap at temperature below 35 K difficult.
