Indirect Excitons in Three-Dimensional Charge-Density-Wave System of BaBiO3

Abstract

In mid-infrared absorption spectrum below the charge density wave(CDW) gap for BaBiO3, we have found long-tail absorption with a square-root spectral shape which is consistent with ≥a picture of the indirect allowed exciton consisting of an electron and a hole at L- and W-points, respectively, at either sides of an indirect gap formed by the three-dimensional CDW. The indirect-gap energy coincides with twice of the activation energy of the electric conduction.

  12. These spectra have resemblance to the resonance Raman spectra of a phonon with frequency of 570cm 1. This exhibits that the phonon observed by Raman scattering is not the breathing-mode one but the forbidden LO1 phonon which would be activated possibly by the Fröhlich interaction.
