Physical Properties of the New Borocarbide Superconductors

Abstract

An overview is given on materials and physical properties of the recently discovered 20K-class layered borocarbide intermetallic superconductors, RETM2B2C (RE=rare-earth, TM=Ni, Pd, Pt). Extensive studies on Lu(Y)Ni2B2C revealed that the new compound is a three dimensional and clean type II superconductor with moderately high density of states at the Fermi level. The high DOS results from significant Ni 3d character near the Fermi level, which gives rise to strong electron correlation and resultant antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation as in high Tc cuprates. On the other hand, strong electron phonon coupling is inferred from the band calculation which demonstrates presence of a broad sp band in addition to the narrow band with predominantly 3d character.
