Reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament with Autogenous Hamstring Graft

  • Conference paper
Reconstruction of the Knee Joint

Summary

Intraarticular reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) requires anatomical placement of the graft for best results. The grafts that are commonly used in ACL reconstruction include the patellar tendon, semitendinosus tendon, and gracilis tendon, as well as allografts. The surgical technique and graft choices for ACL reconstruction should be selected after careful consideration of the patients’ age, size, level of activity, and degree of functional instability. A semitendinosus/gracilis tendon reconstruction should be considered in those patients who have an acute injury, mild to moderate laxity, or a significant history of patellofemoral symptoms. This chapter discusses the reasons to consider an ACL reconstruction using a hamstring graft as well as the surgical technique and results.
