Clinical Study Using MRI in Patients Treated with RAFP Therapy

Abstract

Subsequent to the well-known paper of Damadian on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain tumors [1], many studies have dealt with the relaxation times (RTs) used in the MRI technique. Damadian argued that the RT in malignant tumor tissue was prolonged and many others have since reported that RTs are longer the greater the malignancy of the tumor. Currently, however, the dominant view is that there is no relation between RT and the histological type of the tumor. Moreover, it is now maintained that without contrast media such as Gadolinium diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic-acid (Gd-DTPA) it is impossible to distinguish between the tumor itself and perifocal edema in MRI scans.
