Clinical Analysis of Glioma: Low-Grade Astrocytoma

  • M. Kitahara

There have been many recent studies on the prognosis of malignant glioma cases following various therapies [9, 23, 24, 33], but there have been only a few sporadic reports on the therapeutic results in low-grade astrocytoma (LGA). In previous studies, the prognosis for LGA of the cerebellum has been relatively good [6, 7, 10, 16, 18, 47], but most reports have indicated a relatively poor 5-year survival rate of 40%–60% in supratentorial cases [16, 21, 22, 25, 34, 39, 46]. Moreover, there have been few investigations on the therapeutic method in such cases and definitive conclusions concerning the effectiveness of radiotherapy or chemotherapy following surgery have not yet been possible.
