HA-Coated Total Knee Arthroplasty: A 9-year HA Omnifit Experience

Summary

In joint arthroplasty, a lasting, stable implant fixation without the use of acrylic cement, by means of a bioactive bond between implant and host bone, is a goal as important in the knee as it is in the hip. We would like to report on a personal experience of 345 hydroxyapatite-coated (HA) cruciate-retaining (CR) knees operated on since 1990. Of this number, no patient has been lost to follow-up. The average age was 70.52 years. The type of surgery was primary in 324 cases (93.9%) and revision in 21 cases. Osteoarthritis remains as usual the main etiology (85%). We recorded 0.9% of typical mechanical failures. The mean IKS values at 5yr were 95.3 and 85.1 points regarding “knee score” and “function score,” respectively. In such a way, we recorded 98% (knee score) and 73% (function score) of excellent and good results. Radi- ographically, we had no mechanical loosening, and radiographic changes demon strated a very good HA-bone interface for both femoral and tibial components. The cumulative survival rate at 5 years reaches 0.9935 ± 0.0106. The very encouraging results reported in the current study make us very confident about the ultimate outcome of bioactive coatings in knee arthroplasty.
