New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) was set up in February 1984 as a joint venture in which GM and Toyota each hold a 50% stake. The new company took over the former GM plant in Fremont, California (which had halted production in 1982 due to an acrimonious dispute between the United Automobile Workers and management, and also because of its low productivity and inferior product quality). NUMMI began production at the end of 1984.
