Abstract
A general introduction to Kyōgen and Nō is briefly given. The characters who appear in the plays are gods, farmers, feudal lords, samurai warriors, servants, blind men, thieves, and animals, etc. Kyōgen plays include the interaction or exchange of dialogue between various persons in society. The conversation is complimented by action which is easily understood The pure Japanese language or “Yamato-kotoba” has been maintained by the Kyōgen actors through 700 years. The idea of Yin-Yang is in the background.
