Abstract

Tympanoplasty is a general name of ear surgery for chronic otitis media. This kind of operation has two main steps, that is, eradication of diseased tissue and repair of hearing function through middle ear structure/ear drum reconstruction. The diseased tissue may include granulation tissue, calcification plaques, pus, fibrosis, and cholesteatoma. Depending on their own habits, the surgeons usually have one way of approach into the middle ear, either behind the pinna or directly via the ear canal. If pathology is expected inside the bone, drilling of the bone to enter into the mastoid cells is necessary.
