Abstract
Acta Oto-Laryngologica was founded in 1918 by Gunnar Holmgren — the father of Swedish otolaryngology. In Stockholm Holmgren was the Director of the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at Sabbatsberg Hospital from 1910 to 1940 and Professor of Otolaryngology at Karolinska Institute from 1912 to 1940. He was also Dean of Karolinska Institute from 1931 to 1939. Holmgren was the first Editor-in- chief of Acta until his demise in 1954. The journal was to be published in regular volumes, printed in English, French or German, and under Holmgren’s leadership it was edited with the help of both Swedish and foreign Associates. Dutch otolaryngologists were very interested and, after the Scandinavians, were the first to lend valued services as Associates, being followed by prominent specialists from several other European countries.
