According to a survey of healthcare systems conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in June 2000, the healthcare system in Japan was ranked number one among 191 countries. In Japan, the life expectancy is the highest in the world, and because of the socialized national healthcare system, everyone in Japan can choose the medical institution at which to receive medical care. Furthermore, among the developed countries, the cost of medical care in Japan is relatively low at number 20th in the world. People in Japan have thus been very fortunate.
